Before you came to the United States, you probably had some impressions of Americans from the movies or from things you had read or heard. Now that you live here, tell us about one or two things that have surprised you. These would be things that are different from what you had expected.

Before I went to America, I sometime watched U.S. movies and Night-11 the happen, that gave me feeling about America is not secure country. But, it was different after I came USA. The United States is not same my thinking that it really is very safe, free, democratic, convenient and developed country. America government can protect for everybody when they live in the USA, especially for children and elders. For example, children can free of charge if their parents have no income or elders, lose job persons who can also get aid from government. I also have touched while I saw some bus drivers carefully to cripples or elders when they get in or get off the bus; they indeed are very friendly and lovely. In addition, it real is a free, equal, democratic and developed society. For example, people can free for speech, newspaper and religion, they can also right to government if their government does wrong about some things. Furthermore, the traffic system is so good in America. It is very easy for driving, thought, there are very many cars on the country, but you rarely look at traffic jam. Mostly, governmental controlling is very excellent. The United States people come from different countries on the world, they can free to state their culture, language, and religion and to develop their occupation in America, but the country still has no happen and develop very quickly. Therefore, these reasons give my feeling that the U.S is a safe, free, democratic, convenient and developed country.
I have known a lot of difference races lived in U.S before I came to here and offer much freedom to people, such as the freedom of the news, personal freedom, the freedom of the speech, etc. These impressions are really correct in my psychology, but have two things make me feel surprised. First, drivers are always polite of pedestrians. Drivers usually stop outside before 100 meters of pelican crossing and wait for pedestrians to pass in advance. This thing lets me realize people's life is priceless and safe in here.
Next, U.S.A. is large area so the places of shopping malls always are very large. You can be limitless the piece try it on when you buy the clothes or the shoes, and no one will bother you. The majority shop store they accept customers return goods within three months, in contrast to, my country only 7 days. If you just try it on, don’t want to buy it, sometime the clerk isn’t happy to you. U.S.A. lets me feel persons can have a lot of freedom, about right thing you can just do it, and you don’t need to take notice of others' eyes.
When I stayed in Korea, I watched TV siticom like Friends. Friends was very interesting for me. SO,the United States is always New york city in my mind. Before I come in SF, I expeceted free of the daytime and many high buildings. But, it's just siticom. I can't find that things in San Jose. I always have to listen to class in SAL in the daytime. I can't afford to enjoy my free time. If I absent my class, it's possible. But I don't want to absent my class. And Apt's concept is different. Korea's APT is very high about twenty-five floor. But USA's APT is very low. I imagine high building when I heard my home is APT from my friend. Most of buildings are low and wide. I suprised consideration for disabled person in USA. When disabled person get on the bus or get off the bus, many passenger consider disabled person. Of course, bus is very convience for them. If disabled people want to get on the bus in Korea, they'll have many problems.
Before I came to the us, I watch many movies about us. I saw many high building in the city. So i think the us must be very fashion and moden country. When I first go to the us that is in a small country near the chicago. There are no many high building. Instead of many small shop and mall in there. So that is not real us in my mind. But in several week, I tranfer another other city and visit many cities. I saw the many cities in the us. It is real the us in my mind. The other thing is before i came here, i heard many people said the us is very dangerous, when you go outside, you should be very carefully and many people have their gan. But i came here, i don't think so. i think the us is very safe, if you are friendly to other people.
Actually, the us is very fashion and modern city, but i really want to come my home country, maybe i have many frinds.
Before I came to the US, my favorite TV series is Prison Break. In this program, I knew that there are many skyscrapers in the city. People always keep busy in their work and lives. When I came here, I found that people lead a leisure time and almost every one owns their own house. They often go out with their families to enjoy holidays. Although they devote their selves to their work, they are all in a high spirits. As I am known before, Americans do not like studying at all. The most favorite thing they do in their lives is playing such as skateboard and party. However, every time I am in the library, I saw many American people with their families reading books. The most impressive thing in my mind is that even some aged people patiently reading books, take some notes refer to some references. All in all, the experiences are totally different from my previous views. The best way to lean the real life and culture of a country is experece the local life.
After I come the U.S i find there are many different things from what I had known. One of them is the studying. I saw some American movies and I thought the student weren't focus on studying. They spent more time on playing than studying. They liked to join in activities club but when I come here, it is strange. The student study by themselves. They not only study at school but also at home, in library, with their friends. They have a lot of way to study. I see they really care about their futures. Another thing is the safe. I usually saw action movies of U.S and I thought this country was too dangerous to live. In contrast, I change my mind after a few months living in here. I feel more comfortable with the security system. I know there isn't a place which is completely safe. However, if I am careful when I go out, I will be safe.Thus, I think U.S is a good country to study and live.
Before I came here, I imagined there would be so many ethnicities and muticulture in the United States, and it was right. And, it was more than what I imagined. Frankly speaking, I only thought that there would be many black, white, hispanic and asian like Japanese, Chinese, but, I never imangine that there would so many Indian.
5 year's ago, I had experienced multiculture in Vancouver, Canada first time. But San Jose has more complicated and enormous kinds of ethnicities.
Second, so many homeless and insane people are in San Jose. When I went to school by the Rapid 522, I used to see many homeless and insane people, so my wife and I sometimes used to feel uncomfortable.
It is not illegal to have guns in the United States. I knew that before I came here. I heard the news that someone killed people by gun. That’s why first time I came to the United States, I really scared about that because many murders were using guns and they were killing people without reason in the movie and the news. When I walked streets alone always view people who passing me with suspicion. But that happening is just occurring rarely. Most of Americans are very nice and kind. Actually his behavior is suspicious who living next door but he didn’t give any damage to me (just make to feel strange). Anyway creepy or strange people live U.S and I think that they have guns so can make to terrible. But that is not true.
Jerry's impressions of the United states
Before I came here,one of my impressions of the United States is a county that has a lot of rich people and tycoons. And I found that is totally true because I saw a lot of people drove the luxury car such as Lamborghini, Ferrari etc. when I walked on the street. Some cars were that I had never seen in my life. Next, I thought the United States leads the global economy and is a success country. In these months, this thought just half part is right because the United States also has a serious emergency situation in their economy system. This situation also influences the economy of the world. Now, I know that some of my impressions of the United States are truth, some are wrong.
When I was remember impassion is Hollywood on the T.V. They have much kind of Hollywood sign name all of movies. I was surprising actor shoot guns it is nice action in the Las Vegas and in the studio Hollywood produce. Second, I was thinking about big state (How it is big?) they made movies on that place. I was imagining hot place and dissert also. It’s hard to tell this country is large state and different temperatures zone. When I came to see real thing is different in the movies produce at all. It’s too much heat, very big land, actor on studio, Hollywood name in the mountain. Overall I understood large wide, Hollywood studio produce, heat in dissert in this country. They can make in the Hollywood studio.
I known American culture as I have many friends who were studied or immigrated to America. So my impression of Americans is quite real. After I came here, I realized that the city’s facility for disability was thorough than Hong Kong. However, one of the things which surprised me is too much stranger on the street all the time. Homeless sleeps on the road, strangers asks people give them money, drunkers talks with themselves… No one tell me and I never seen about that from American’s movie.
